Is Counseling Really Effective?

Is Counseling Really Effective?

Some people take counseling for granted. Some say that counseling is just equivalent to a friend listening and comforting you when you feel down. But actually, counseling is based on solid theories about human behavior, cognition, and emotion. Counseling and therapy are effective, most especially if the person and the loved ones involved are willing to take professional help seriously. What makes a counseling session effective?

  • Free flow of information

Counseling is all about giving details and listening to details. It’s about reciprocal communication. If the persons involved in the session are honest enough to tell their real thoughts or emotions, the easier it will be for the facilitator of the session to assess the real problem. The facilitator of the session, whether a psychologist or a social worker, is trained to listen to you and to remain neutral or objective as much as possible. It is your job to be honest with your words and to take into heart what the facilitator of the session said.

  • Research and theories

Counseling isn’t just about conversation. Facilitators of a counseling session are usually psychologists, psychiatrists, psychotherapists, and medical social workers. These people have read and understood various scientific studies about humans. They talk to you and give you advice based on a solid, factual ground. They don’t mean to meddle with your personal life or feelings. They will always want what’s better for you.

  • The will to change

Counseling is not effective if you or other persons involved in the session is resistant to change. You must be willing to change for the better. You must be ready for criticisms since this will make you a better individual. You should take the facilitator’s advice as if it were a prescription from a doctor.

  • Support

As a family member or a loved one, you should be supportive to the person who is receiving advice from a counseling session. Don’t make it worse by saying, “I was right all along!” or “You never listen to me, and now you’re listening to a stranger.” Reprimanding makes it only worse. You need to be patient, attentive, and understanding to the person for as much as possible.
